Description

#3030 Special Event: Vietnamese Water Puppets

Moderator:  Aaron Casey

(Presenters will be teaching via Zoom from Vietnam  and Washington, D.C.)

This class explores the ancient Vietnamese art of water puppetry, practiced primarily in the north of the country. For centuries, master puppeteers have used this unique, high-art form to tell stories; establish community norms, ethics and expectations; and entertain children and adults alike. Puppeteers, highly respected for their skill, masterfully manipulate their elaborate, resplendent puppets. Chest deep in a river, stream, or shallow lake, hands submerged, the puppeteers ply their trade – and dazzle as they do so. Initially we will explore the history and artistry of these sublime performances; and then, quickly, we will pivot to hear from artists on the ground in Vietnam.
