#1012 Community Event: The Dangerous Truth About Today’s Marijuana: Johnny Stack’s Life and Death Story
Presenter: Laura Stack
Laura Stack’s 19-year-old son, Johnny, died by suicide on November 20, 2019, because of paranoid delusions from using high-THC marijuana concentrates. Soon afterward, Laura started a 501(c)3, Johnny’s Ambassadors, to educate parents and teens about the dangers of today’s high-THC marijuana on adolescent brain development, mental illness, and suicide. In this class, Laura will share the story of Johnny’s marijuana addiction, from a parent’s point of view, from the first warning signs to rehabilitation attempts, to Johnny’s eventual suicide.
Based in Colorado, one of the first states in America to legalize the recreational use of marijuana, Johnny’s Ambassadors sets out to educate parents, family members, and young people about the impacts of marijuana use, especially high-THC marijuana. Essentially, the THC is stripped out of the cannabis plant and is very concentrated. The results of using high-THC marijuana products can be devastating, especially in young people, leading to mental illness and even, as in this case, to suicide.
Laura Stack, MBA in Organizational Management from UCCS. She is the Founder & CEO of Johnny’s Ambassadors a 501(c)3 nonprofit. https://johnnysambassadors.org/johnny-stacks-story/
