In 1903, the Cripple Creek District was known as the world’s greatest gold camp. After the powerful Western Federation of Miners (WFM) called a sympathy strike, Colorado’s anti-union governor activated the National Guard and state militia, declared martial law, and, with the help of Pinkerton spy James McPar-land, destroyed both the strike and the WFM.


Mary Ellen Johnson: Mary Ellen is the author of three Trav-els Across Time books. The latest is The Golden Promise of Cripple Creek, which is about the Colorado Labor Wars. She is currently working on a six-book series about 1893-94 Crip-ple Creek - Victor.
