Description

1850 Census:  A Turning Point in the United States History

Instructor: Barbara Headle

We will review the Constitutional intent of the Census, the divisive political and social context in which the Census was taken, and end with the question,   “Why was this Census a turning point in the country’s history? This class uses the 1850 Census to examine the reasons why, at this particular point in the country’s history, Congress determined that there was a need to count women and children by name, and, to create a special Slave Schedule.
