Ancient Egypt: Land of the Pharaohs

This class will include a history of ancient Egypt from its founding as one of the world’s first great civilizations in 3,200 BCE through the conquest of Egypt by Alexander the Great and later by the Romans in 32 BCE. The presentation will highlight many of the most famous monuments of ancient Egypt such as the pyramids on the Giza Plateau, Karnak and Luxor Temples, Abu Simbel, and the tombs of kings and noblemen. Emphasis will be placed on some of the most famous Egyptian pharaohs including Ramesses the Great, Tutankhamun, and Cleopatra. The speaker will also discuss some of his work in and around the famed Valley of the Kings, and what it is like to work on an archaeological excavation.

 

Richard S. Harwood, JD in Law from Duke University School of Law. He retired from a career in trust banking and is now the Associate Director of the University of Arizona Egyptian Expedition. He spent twenty-five years doing archaeological excavations in Egypt and Sudan.
